Commander’s Column

Wow, what a hot one.  We have been at hotter events but Manassas took the cake.  They were right, no shade, in the middle of a field.  I am glad I brought the extra tent flies and thank goodness for the coolers of ice and watermelons.  A huge thanks to Mr. Alexander for putting us all back together when we got back from the battle on Saturday.  If it had not been for him there would have been a lot more heat injuries, myself include.  Mr. Perry’s jug of juice really hit the spot too, I am not sure what was in there but it was good and seemed to help replenish many a hot solider.  On to bigger and better things.

Side Note:  Due to the lack of interest, we Will Not Attend Chesapeake Civil Days.  So much for making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.  Enjoy your weekend off, I know I will on the golf course.  Also, Happy Birthday to Mr. Courson on that weekend.

 Gettysburg Firing Program

The Gettysburg Firing program is coming very soon.  Sept 21-22.  This is a first but Pvt. Vice will be in town for it and he has invited everyone to stay at the old home place Friday and Saturday nights.  Saturday there will be a company cookout at his home.  For the event, bring powder and caps packed up so that it can be turned into the NPS.  We will be at the usual place in Pitzer’s Wood in Gettysburg.  The program starts at 1000, don’t be late!  There is a map to the location as well as Mr. Vice’s farm.

Here is what is published on the Gettysburg NPS site.

September 22-23: 21st Virginia Infantry and 4th North Carolina Infantry Living History encampment and programs at Pitzer’s Woods.

A Note From Cpl. Pearson

Dear Members of the 21st VA F-Company

Well, it's been a week, and it was almost like the 140th First Manassas was gone in a flash

I personally want to thank each member of the unit who braved the intense heat of the three-day weekend.  And, as always, thanks for tolerating all my antics.  I can't change the inner child in me.  It's probably the only thing I've got going for me in attempting to maintain this false-hood called "youth".

Although it was quite miserable out there, it did my heart and spirit good to see that we all pulled together as a unit and helped each other along the way.  The three HUMUNGUS watermelons that were kept on ice the entire weekend probably saved us more than we realize.  Thank goodness for the ice/plenty of water/ and the Fly to keep us out of the direct sun and saved a few during Friday night's rain.  This event caused a lot of discomfort to some of us……Although the heat was unbearable, and we still maintained a hot fire for cooking, cleaning up, and musket maintenance, we still remained there as a unit.  I couldn't have been any happier when we were given the option of wearing battle shirts on Sunday WHAM mine was history.  It's the first time I've actually ever went into battle in just a shirt.  Quite stylish and cooler.  My hat goes off to Captain Jones for being there with all of us for the entire weekend.  It would've been appropriate for him to cancel due to his recent surgery, but as a true Gentleman and caring Officer .he was there for us from start to finish.  Don't get me wrong. I quit brown nosing in 1970 all that gets you is a smelly nose and little friends.

After my shower and fumigation...I realized how much I already missed all of you and wished to be out there again, what am I?  A bloomin' idiot?

Thanks to all of you, and I mean that sincerely.  I couldn't imagine being around a nicer bunch of guys and still be faithful to my little lady.

Gentlemen I think we can all attest to the fact that we earned our medallion at this event.

Have a safe August, and I will be seeing you all soon enough...I pity you for that.

Your good friend, and a non-brown nosing Corporal in good standing,

  Now for Something Completely Different!

It has been noted over the past year or so that there have been questions about the information that has already been published in the newsletter. Our newsletter has plenty of good information and sometimes too much.  In an effort to ensure communication is as complete as possible, we are going back to the printed version of the newsletter for the year.  As you may have noticed, you have a “dead tree” version in addition to the email copy.  This is in an effort to generate more communication and possibly, get more people out to events.  We will try this regression to the past for a while and see how things go.  I know I am not so impressed with an email, however, there is just something about getting a letter, it is a rare commodity now a days.  Yes, it is more work, but if it brings the company together more, then so be it.

 Ukrops Golden Gift Program

The Ukrop’s Golden Gift program has paid off.  As it states in the fine print, and regular print, “participants can receive up to 2% after tax”, of course.  Well, something is better than nothing.  $99.50 has been added to the company funds.  It is less than two percent but money is money.  We will see what we can do for next year.  Thanks to everyone that participated.

 Annual Soriee Invitations Coming Soon

The Soriee is a few months away.  This is our chance to thank the ladies for letting us play.  Invitations will be going out in the mail soon.
