Vol. VIII. May, 2009 Issue 4

Captain’s Column

May is upon us and we will soon be getting into the meat of our schedule.  Before I get into that, I want to thank those who helped out with the April Activities.  We had a work day at the fort on April 18th.  Those there included Nate Pate, David Gammon, Eldridge Firth, Bob Baird, Shane Kisner, Travis Clements, and Michael Floyd.  On the 22nd, there was the School Day Program at Tredegar.  We did four demos for about 200+ school children.  Those there for this program included Tom Stafford, David Gammon, Nate Pate, and Bob Baird.  I want to thank everyone who participated in these events.

The Quartermaster would like to let you know that we have received a shipment of braces into the company inventory.  We only got 3 pair and one is already spoken for so if you need braces, please let me know.

Upcoming activities for the unit include our first battle reenactment of the 2009 season.  This is the Battle of New Market and is the weekend of May 16th and 17th.  This is a 145th event.  I think we have good numbers signed up for this event and we will be working in conjunction with Captain Bill Russell and his company, the 47th Virginia.  Particulars of the event will be in the 1st Sergeant’s report and directions will be included in this newsletter.

We also include information about our next event because it is the weekend of June 6th and 7th and may be hard pressed to get it in the next newsletter.  Of course I am talking about the Cold Harbor living history program.  We have done this for many years in the past.  This year is the 145th anniversary of the actual battle.  Being so, the National Park Service has asked the 26th North Carolina Regiment to help out with the commemoration of the event.  This is an eighty member plus group, so participants for this year’s event will be more than we are used to.  Because of these increased numbers we may have to make some changes in our normal part of the program.  But that is fine – the more, the merrier.  This is not a paid event so if you did not register and you want to come, please do.  If you want to show up on Friday and spend the night, you may do that too.  Directions are included in this newsletter.

As I said at the beginning of this article we are getting into the meat of our schedule.  If you signed up for something, please make every effort to be there.  Support your unit.  We are only as good as you want us to be.  I will see you all at New Market and then Cold Harbor.

Respectfully Submitted,

Captain Turley

1st Sergeant’s Report

Gentlemen,

We have New Market coming up on May 16th and 17th. Please try to arrive by 8:00 A.M. on Saturday. Directions will follow in the newsletter. I have the following people signed up. (Turley, Stafford, Gammon, Hughes, Baird, Catlett, Clements, Floyd, Pate, Kisner, Ward) There will be a battle each day so bring plenty of rounds.

Cold Harbor is coming up on June 6th and 7th. You may arrive on Friday night if you choose but if you choose Saturday, please arrive by 8:00 A.M. Bring at least 30 rounds and 40 - 50 caps in a bag with your name and unit on it. We turn our ammo in to the Park Service and they issue them back to us at each demo. Do not have any rounds in your cartridge box or caps in your cap pouch. I have the following people signed up. (Turley, Stafford, Gammon D., Firth, Hughes, Gammon M., Alexander, Catlett, Clements, Floyd, Kisner, Pate, Ward)

You will need to plan for your own meals for both events. These are good numbers for these two events, so please make every effort to attend if you signed up.

                                                                         Respectfully,

                                                                       1st Sgt. Gammon
