Vol. VII. May, 2008 Issue 4.
Captains Column
Gentlemen,
I would like to begin by thanking everyone who helped with the events we participated in during the month of April. Kudos goes to Jack Alexander and Mike Vice for manning the table at the Chantilly Civil War Show on the 12th and 13th. They were there both days and got a lot of pictures of youngsters in Civil War period clothes (shell jacket and hat). Who knows? One day they may want to get into reenacting and they may look us up. You cant plant the seed too soon. Hopefully, we will get some new recruits as a result of the show. We are still working on them. We have some good prospects. We will definitely do the show again next year.
On Thursday, April 17th, we did a living history program at Tredegar Civil War Museum. Tom Stafford, Dave Gammon, Nate Pate, and I helped with this. We did two demos in the morning and one in the afternoon. According to Ed Sanders there were over 300 students altogether. Ed seemed to be very pleased with our efforts. We got a nice thank you letter from him. A copy is enclosed.
The last weekend of the month, the 26th and 27th was the Living Liberty Reenactment at Bedford. This turned out to be a rain plagued event. Tom Stafford, Dave Gammon, and Nate Pate drove up on Friday night. They ended up having to sleep in Nates vehicle because of rain. We were able to get in the Saturdays afternoon battle and tactical before the rain started again. That evening we went out to eat at The Olde Liberty Station and the rain started again. Luckily Travis Clements knew someone who had a place at nearby Smith Mountain Lake. Even better, Travis had a key to this place and his friend told him that he (we) could stay there. So thanks to Travis we had a nice dry place to spend the night. When we got back to the event in the morning, with the continued threat of rain, we decided to bag the event, go get some breakfast, and then go home. Those that attended the event included Tom Stafford, David Gammon, Eldridge Firth, Ryan Hughes, Nate Pate, Bob Baird, Travis Clements, Scott Wilson, and new recruit Michael Floyd.
Now for the month of May we have the Cold Harbor Living History. This is really a May/June event falling on May 31st and June 1st. This is a standard with F Company. We usually do a couple of demos during the day on Saturday with the candle light tour that night. Sunday we will do one or two demos depending on how late the Yankees can stay. If you did not sign up for this but find you can participate please do. There is no registration fee. Also some of the 4th North Carolina may fall in with us for the weekend.
Ed Sanders has invited us to participate in a living history program at Gaines Mill right down from Cold Harbor the weekend of June 28th and 29th. This is the weekend before Gettysburg. It will be very similar to Cold Harbor. We will be working in conjunction with the 3rd Virginia. If you are interested please let the 1st Sergeant know.
Thats it for now. I will see you at Cold Harbor. Please remember our troops in your prayers
Respectfully submitted,
Captain Turley

Gentlemen,
I would like to thank you for hanging in there for the Bedford Event. Once again, Mother Nature demonstrated that she can be unpredictable. We did manage to engage in the Saturday battle and enjoyed our evening meal. Kudos goes out to Travis for offering a nice alternative for our Saturday evening sleeping arrangements. Unfortunately, on Sunday morning the weather was looking worse than what we had subjected ourselves too on Saturday, so the decision to leave was not extremely difficult.
Well, we have Cold Harbor Living History weekend coming up on May 31st. If anyone who has not signed up would like to come, please do so. This event is always fun and we do have down time. The candlelight tour is definitely a highlight of this event. I know that y'all would not want to pass up the chance to do a little drilling and such. Remember, the temperature can be either hot, mild or cool, so bring what you need for the weekend. I look forward to seeing y'all at Cold Harbor.
Respectfully
1st LT. J. Thomas Stafford

Gentlemen,
Cold Harbor is fast approaching. Provided the park does not get washed away in the monsoons we seem to be having every other day, the event will be May 31st and June 1st. Please try to arrive on Saturday morning no later than 7:30 A.M. to allow time to set up camp and get situated for the weekend. You will need to bring your own food items for the weekend as the Co. will not be doing meals. We will have a fire if you need to do some cooking and time will be allotted to prepare meals. Some folks have gone out for Dinner on Saturday evening before the candlelight tour, so that is an option if you so desire. Please bring at least 30 blank rounds and some caps bagged in a Ziploc bag with your name on it. We have to turn our rounds and caps in to the park service and they issue them back to us for each demo. DO NOT have rounds or caps in your cartridge or cap pouches while in camp.
If anyone needs any items from our inventory, please contact Wes Catlett before the event and he can bring it for you. Wes is not going to lug our entire inventory to the event. If anyone needs to borrow any items for the weekend, please let me know ahead of time and I may be able to find them for you.
I have the following people signed up for Cold Harbor. (Turley, Stafford, Gammon D., Firth, Gammon M., Catlett, Clements, Floyd, Kisner, Pate, Ward.) Remember, this is not a registered event so if you didn't sign up and you want to come you can just show up. If you did sign up, please make every effort to attend.
I want to send a big F Co. thank you out to Travis Clements for saving our bacon at Bedford a few weeks ago. Travis had access to a great little house on Smith Mountain Lake which provided a wonderfully restful night's sleep and an escape from the deluge on Saturday night. After sleeping in the car on Friday night, it was just what the Doctor ordered. Thanks again Travis.
I look forward to seeing everyone at Cold Harbor.
Respectfully,
1stSgt. Gammon
Note from the Editor
We may have discovered a back door into Gettysburg. I understand from Longstreet's Corps that we can still get in. They have extended registration. We need to know quickly who would still be interested in going. We would like to know by Monday the 19th at the latest. I know this is short notice, but everybody felt bad about not signing up and we have dug around and found this new way in. Keep in mind this is the 145th and should be a big exciting event.
Directions to Cold Harbor
From the North or West: Take I-95 South toward Richmond,
Take I-295 South toward Norfolk. Take the second Creighton Road Exit 34 A.
From the East and South: Get on I-295 North toward
Washington. Take the 1st Creighton Road exit 34 A.
Proceed to the first stoplight (Cold Harbor Road). Take a right. Go about 3 miles and the park will be on the left. You will clearly see the small visitors center building. The designated parking area changes slightly from year to year, but it is always down by the visitors center, usually by the fence on the left (as you come in).
