Vol. X. March, 2011 Issue 2.

Captain’s Column

Gentlemen,

I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend the annual meeting on Saturday, February 19th. We had a good turnout and we were able to conduct our business in a timely manner. I would like to welcome two new members to the unit. They are Karl Bunch from Suffolk and Dustin Gunter from Richmond. Karl discovered us at the civil war show last November and Dustin is brought to us by last year’s rookie of the year Matthew Guillen.

Welcome to the unit guys!

If you were not at the meeting you were missed. Announcements from the meeting include the following:

By the time you get this news letter the fort work day will have come and gone. I hear we have a good number signed up to help out. Thank you in advance for your help.

Now we need to get ready for the Camp of Instruction. It will be March 25th – 27th Friday evening through mid-day Sunday. Please! Make every effort to be there. See the COI schedule later in this newsletter. This is the time to shake out the cobwebs and get back in gear, mentally, physically, and accouterment wise. Heed the 1st Sergeant’s recommendations. Meals will be provided for Saturday morning and evening and Sunday morning. Bring extra food for lunch and snacks. Hopefully the weather will be nice but bring whatever you think you will need to keep warm. This will be our first opportunity to get together for a weekend and rekindle old friendships, develop new ones, and just enjoy camp comradery. I will see you all there.

Respectfully Submitted,

Captain Turley

1st Sergeant’s Report

Gentlemen,

I will begin by reminding everyone that if you have not turned in an event sheet, I need it immediately. I have some early registrations to turn in and if I don't have a sheet from you, I cannot include you. Dues must also be in to Jack by March 15th if you want to remain in good standing with the unit.

Camp of instruction will be Friday, March 25th - Sunday, March 27th. Please try to arrive on Friday afternoon to give yourself enough time to set up camp. If you must arrive on Saturday morning, please be in camp no later than 6:30 A.M.. More than likely, a group of people will be going into town on Friday evening for dinner.

The company will be cooking breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings and dinner on Saturday evening. We will be chipping in to cover the cost of the three meals, so bring some dollar bills. It usually works out to about $8 - $10 each for the weekend meals. Any other food you need for the weekend will be your own responsibility.

There will be a live firing competition on Saturday afternoon. There will be an individual category as well as a platoon, or team category. Results will be announced Saturday evening around the campfire.

You are allowed to bring sleeping bags and other modern items to keep warm with at night, but I do ask that you make every effort to keep these modern items hidden in your tent or shelter to keep them out of sight and photographs. If you will be needing to borrow any equipment, modern or period, please let someone know far enough in advance so we can work it out.

Please bring about 20 blank rounds and enough caps for firing practice. There will also be a full equipment layout and inspection on Sunday morning. I will have copies of the appropriate layout sheet for those that need them. If anyone has any extra equipment that you don't mind lending out, please bring it along. We are going to have three new recruits at camp this year and they will not have time to get everything they will need before camp.

There will be directions to the fort later in this newsletter. It is vital that you make every effort to attend camp. You play like you practice, and if we don't practice it will show at the events. I am looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Your Obedient Servant,

1st SGT. Gammon

Organizational Announcement

From the Desk of the 1st Sgt.

As you know, Captain Turley has been managing the duties of Quartermaster for the last couple of years. He will continue in this capacity, keeping the inventory here in the Richmond area. Beginning immediately, Johnathan Alexander will be assisting the Captain with the administrative portion of the office.

If you need to purchase anything from our inventory, please contact Johnathan to purchase the item and you will need to contact Captain Turley to pick up the item. If you have a new item that you would like the company to consider for the inventory, or an improvement idea for an existing item, you will need to contact Johnathan. I would like to thank Johnathan for stepping up to help us out with this.

Thank you

1st SGT. Gammon
