Vol. IX. May/June, 2010 Issue 4.

Captain’s Column

As the heading indicates, this is a dual month newsletter for the months of May and June.  The reason for such is that there are no scheduled activities for the month of May.  We had contemplated going to New Market or the Lewisburg event but neither generated enough interest to justify us doing so.  There were only a few members to sign up for each one.  That most assuredly would mean that we would be thrown in with another unit.  When that happens, the battle would take on a whole different complexion and it’s just not the same as when you are beside your F Company pards.  Now if you had your heart set on going to either one of these events you can probably still go.  Just check out the website to see if they are taking walk-ons and if they are, you can go that route.

I would like to thank everyone who helped with Richmond Civil War Day.  We had a pretty good attendance with the event featuring the militia impression.  Those there in the militia uniform included Jack Alexander, Jonathan Alexander, Eldridge Firth, Scott Wilson, and Myself.  Those in the wartime impression included David Gammon and Matthew Guillen.  We did three demos along with the Yankee unit (the 28th Massachusetts) that came in for the event.  Most everyone was somewhat mesmerized by the militia impression and it was good to see the unit make use of it after such a long layoff.  It was a good event and well received.  Thanks to the out-of-towners for coming in for this one (you too, Muriel) and thanks to the regular locals who always support the unit.

Now what we find lacking for the month of May, June will more than makeup for.  We have three events scheduled for June.  They are Cold Harbor, the weekend of June 5th and 6th, the Shenandoah Reenactment June 12th and 13th, and the Gaines Mill living History the weekend of June 26th and 27th.  So we have back to back weekends then a weekend off, followed by a third event, all within a month’s time!  That is almost unheard of for F Company.  I don’t know that we have ever done that before.  Way to go guys.  Now let’s just try to keep our numbers up and attend what we signed up for.  The particulars of each event are in the 1st Sergeant’s report so see his article for more info and details.

So enjoy the time off for the month of May but do try to get in shape.  I have heard that the Shenandoah Reenactment involves a couple of marches.  So get ready!  See you in June!

Respectfully Submitted,

Captain Turley

1st Sergeant’s Report

Gentlemen,

We have three events coming up between now and the end of June. The first is going to be Cold Harbor on June 5th - 6th. Please arrive by 8:30 A.M. and bring 30 rounds and your caps in a bag with your name on it. We will turn our rounds in to the Park Service and be issued enough for each demo before we hit the field. You will be responsible for your own meals for the weekend. There will be a candlelight tour on Saturday evening also. Directions will follow in the newsletter. I have the following people signed up: (Turley, Gammon D., Firth, Hughes, Gammon M., Baird, Catlett, Clements, Guillen, Vice, Ward).  This is not a registered event so if you didn't sign up and want to come out, please feel free.

The next will be Shenandoah 1862 which will be on June 11th - 13th. This will be a battlefield preservation event. There will be two battles and you will want to bring about 75 or 80 rounds. There will also be a march after the Saturday battle, we will camp for the night and march out early Sunday morning into battle. You will want to plan for a campaign style weekend and I recommend that you bring only what you can carry on your back. If you have a knapsack this will be a good event for it. We will be marching with our camp gear. Please pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to the event schedule included in the newsletter. You will notice that registration CLOSES at 8:00 A.M. on Saturday morning. You will need to get there no later than 7:30 A.M. so you will have time to register and be shuttled to the battlefield to locate the unit. Please wear all of your gear to registration for inspection.  The battle begins at 9:30 A.M. and we march out shortly after. It may be beneficial to arrive on Friday night. I have the following people signed up: (Turley, Gammon D., Hughes, Gammon M., Alexander Jack, Alexander Jonathan, Catlett, Clements, Guillen, Pate, Vice, Ward). Directions will be in the newsletter and you will be responsible for your own food for the weekend.

The last will be Gaines' Mill on June 26th - 27th. This will be similar to Cold Harbor without the candlelight tour. Bring the same number of rounds as Cold Harbor and bag them with your name on it. Please arrive by 8:30 A.M. and you will be responsible for your own food. Directions will follow in the newsletter.

Gentlemen, we have good numbers for these events and it will be nice to have a good sized unit in the field. If you have signed up please make every effort to attend. Make the necessary arrangements to get there on time, especially for Shenandoah since it's a little unusual as far as the times. Remember, a lot of people take off time from work or pass up overtime to be there and if you don't show up it is all for naught.

Your Obedient Servant,

1st Sgt Gammon
