Vol. VII. June, 2008 Issue 5.

Captain’s Column

I hope everyone is coping with the heat as best you can. I hope also that this is not a foretaste of the kind of weather we will be getting at Gettysburg.

I do want to thank everyone who attended our annual Cold Harbor Living History. We did two demos on Saturday and one on Sunday with the candlelight tour Saturday night. For the demos, Larry Bopp of the 4th North Carolina offered the narration while I did the commands. Four to six members of the 4th North Carolina formed up with us for the weekend. F Company had about ten members present.

The weather was cooperative with only a brief shower on Saturday afternoon. I thought everything went very smoothly. We had good attendance and a good time. It was good to see Matt Gammon back in action. Those who attended included Wes Catlett, Eldridge Firth, Michael Floyd, Dave Gammon, Matt Gammon, Shane Kisner, Nate Pate, Tom Stafford, and Bill Ward. It was good to see our friends from the 4th N.C. They included Tom Warner, Larry Bopp, Lee Hadden, Bryan, Joe, and Carl.

Next up for us is the Gettysburg event. We have about nine members signed up for this one. Because of the way in which we had to register (because of the indecision about whether or not to go) when you check in at registration tell them that we are part of the 47th Virginia, Company I. Bill Russell is Captain of the 47th. We are NOT registered as the 21st VA, Company F. This is VERY IMPORTANT! For check in purposes only, we are part of the 47th VA, Company I. The 21st VA, Co. F is not registered.

This is a huge event. It is at the same location as it has been for the past several years. I heard they acquired or added more acreage to accommodate the increased number of participants (12,000 to 15,000 expected). To save on gas, I urge those of you who can car pool, to do so. As of now, I intend to go up during the day on Friday, the 4th. So that we can all find each other, please be armed with your cell phone and a list of cell phone wielding members.

It is probably going to be hot so bring whatever you think you will need. Of course, you can only take so much out in the field but bring enough supplies that you can keep in your "supply wagon" to be as comfortable as possible. Also please be aware that the last battle of the event is of course "Pickett’s Charge". This battle is scheduled for 3:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Also keep in mind that the area of this reenactment is very rural and the roads were not built to accommodate large numbers of cars. There will probably be a huge traffic jam after the battle. So plan your escape/ departure accordingly.

Looking ahead to August, Scott Wilson and Mike Vice are planning a driving tour of Lee’s Retreat. We would be in a rented, air conditioned van that seats fifteen people. With the expense of renting the van and the entry fees at some of the sites, it looks like it may cost about $30.00 per person. We are looking to do this Saturday, August 9th. We would meet in Petersburg about 9am, have lunch in Farmville, and hopefully be back between 3 and 4 pm. We do need to know how many members would be interested in doing this. Please let me, the 1st sergeant, or the 1st lieutenant know a soon as possible. This is our only event in August. Let us hear from you.

OK, this is it for now. We have our work cut out for us. Let’s get ready for Gettysburg. See you there.

Respectfully Submitted,

Your Captain,

Tony Turley

Gentlemen,

By the time this newsletter goes out, there will be about two weeks until Gettysburg. Please try to arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. (July 5th) Nate and I were discussing setting up a large carpool leaving from my house. We can take most everyone that signed up and we'll all split the gas. If you would like to be included, please let me know. The Captain is planning to go up on Friday to secure us a site. Please bring 70 - 80 rounds and whatever you need for food for the weekend. There are food vendors there if you want to do it that way. Carpool or not, there are directions to follow in the newsletter. If you need to borrow anything for this event, please contact someone to give them a heads-up. When you register at the event, tell them we are the 47th Va., Company I. (Captain Bill Russell) The following people are registered: (Turley, Stafford, Gammon D., Firth, Gammon M., Floyd, Kisner, Pate, Ward) The 4th N.C. may look us up to fall in with us also.

Our muster event is going to be Aug. 9th and it now looks like the cost per person is going to be about thirty dollars, plus food expenses. I need to know as soon as possible if you are planning to attend. I have heard from about half of you and I thank those folks for a timely response. I guess the rest of you just want to see me go completely gray. PLEASE LET ME KNOW SOMETHING. I need to let Scott and Mike know who to plan for.

I look forward to hearing from everyone and seeing you at Gettysburg. Let's make this a great event.

                                                                               Respectfully,

                                                                                                  1st Sgt. Gammon
