Vol. VII. February, 2008 Issue 1.

Captain’s Column

I hope everyone had a great holiday season.  Now that things are slowly getting back to normal, it is time to turn our attention to the 2008 Reenactment Season.

Our Annual Business Meeting is scheduled for February 16th in the Fellowship Hall of Clover Hill Baptist Church off of Courthouse Road in Chesterfield County. The scheduled times are from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Directions were in the last newsletter and are repeated here for your convenience.  The Church is not far from Bob Moates Gun Shop or where Fenny Hanes lives (just in case you should want or need to go by either place).

Please plan to attend the meeting.  Officers will be elected and the schedule will be discussed for this year.  Come prepared to offer suggestions as to what you would like us to do this year.  Please remember that suggestions without actions are just empty words.

F Company can only be as good as our members will allow us to be.  By that I am referring to the participation level of each member.  Right now our numbers are relatively small so that makes YOUR participation that much more important.  Please resolve to do what you can for F Company.  Ask not what F Company can do for you but what you can do for F Company.

Coming up before the Annual Meeting is the Richmond Antique and Civil War Spectacular in Mechanicsville at the Showplace.  It is scheduled for the weekend of January 26th and 27th and F Company will be there.  However, by the time this newsletter is published, the show will be over.  I would like to thank everyone who helped especially Jack who came in from out of town.

That’s it for now.  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Meeting.  Remember our troops overseas in your prayers. See you soon!

Your Captain,

Tony Turley

1st Lieutenant’s Report

Gentlemen,

I am looking forward to seeing y’all at our annual meeting. I am also looking forward to this season of reenacting and living history events. I have not been in the newsletters much this past year, but fear not I will remedy that this year. I have been asked to help establish a Muster Committee. I will elaborate more at the Annual Meeting. I hope to see all of our F Company members and persons interested in our group at the Annual Meeting. If you were with the Company in the past and you would like to rejoin us, don’t hesitate to come to the Annual Meeting!

Respectfully,

1st LT J.Thomas Stafford

1st Sergeant’s Report

Gentlemen,

By the time this reaches you, we will have done the Civil War Show at the Showplace in Richmond. I hope we will have some new members at the meeting next month to show for it. The meeting is going to be on February 16th at Captain Turley's church on Courthouse Road in Richmond. Directions and times will follow. I urge everyone to be in attendance. We are planning to go out for a late lunch or early dinner afterwards. If you have any info on events or living histories coming up, please bring it to the meeting. The company gear will be there so you can make your supply purchases for the upcoming season. We hope to have the place and date for the C.O.I. nailed down by then also. I encourage everyone to do their best to make camp this year. We are going to freshen up on our drill this season. The executive committee will meet on Friday, February 15th at Captain Turley's house. Directions will be available upon request and not broadcasted in the newsletter.

Many thanks go out to Ryan Hughes, John Parks, and Nate Pate for their dedicated service to F Co. in providing a monthly newsletter and a fantastic website. Please be sure to thank these gentlemen for their hard work and sacrifice.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting.

Your Obedient Servant,

David Gammon

Suggestions for Reenacting

Although the company is commanded by the Captain and coordinated by the Lieutenant, the First Sergeant is in control.  Be at formation a couple of minutes early.  When you see the First Sergeant put on his equipment, get yours on as soon as possible.  The company runs on First Sergeant’s watch and none other.   If you do not have First Sergeant time, you are wrong.  Whatever the orders, do exactly what the First Sergeant says.  Right or wrong, anything different makes you wrong.  This may sound hard to do, but it is not at all.  You definitely learn how to be a true soldier of the period, which will only enhance your experience.

Do Not salute the First Sergeant; he works for a living.

Do Not take any comments personally that are made to you by the officers, as they may see a safety issue or show you that you are doing something wrong.  Do Not take it personally!

Dry socks are one of the many luxuries of re-enacting.  An extra pair is invaluable once the originals get wet.

Live as lean as you can and adjust it up as you get used to it.  This is in regard to the extra stuff you carry.
