Vol. VI. December 07 / January, 08 Issue 10.

Captains Column

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. It seems like a long time ago now. The Holidays are in full swing. It is a very busy time for everyone even more so than usual.

I would like to thank those who helped with the Civil War Show at RIR or the old Fairgrounds. Those included Bob Baird, David Gammon, Eldridge Firth, and Wes Catlett. We were not over whelmed with interest but you never know what seeds may have been planted.

I do want to welcome our newest member to the unit. His name is Shane Kisner. He found us through our website. He lives in King William County but does work in Richmond. He has gotten off to a good start. He came by the Civil War Show and got fitted for his uniform. Welcome, Shane!

We do have a break in company actives with nothing scheduled before our annual business meeting in February. I hope everyone will take time to rest up (after the holidays) and inspect one’s stuff and make note of any needed repairs or equipment that needs to be replaced. Now is the best time to do things like that.

Our annual meeting will be Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Fellowship Hall of Clover Hill Baptist Church. The church is located on Courthouse Road in Chesterfield County not far from the intersection of Hull Street Road and Courthouse Road. The scheduled time for the meeting is from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. We do plan to go out to eat afterward. Please mark this date on your calendar.

Please note that this is a December / January newsletter meaning that there will not be a separate newsletter for January 2008. The next newsletter will be out around the first of February 2008. Any late-breaking information that you need to know will be passed on to you via your E-mail or by an old fashioned phone call. So please be aware.

If anyone has any ideas for company musters please let them be known. Musters seem to be very popular among the membership and are usually very well attended. Mike Vice and Scott Wilson are planning a route of Lee’s Retreat. The date is still yet to be determined.

I do want to think everyone for their support during the 2007 Reenactment Season. I appreciate everyone’s faithfulness to the unit. We have a good core of members who attend virtually every event or activity. It makes my job that much easier when we have devoted members that support the unit as you do. I look forward to things getting even better during 2008.

Please remember our troops especially this time of year and keep them in your prayers and Happy New Year. Please remember too the real reason we celebrate the season – the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Until next time, God Bless!

Respectfully submitted,

Captain Tony Turley

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and got their fill of turkey and/or football. We worked the Civil War show the weekend prior to Thanksgiving and got a few people to sign the register. We'll see how that works out. Thanks goes out to all who helped out.

I would like to announce to everyone that we have a new recruit. His name is Shane Kisner. He found us through our website. I would like to thank John Parks for all of his efforts in keeping up our site, he does a great job. Shane stopped by our table at the show on Saturday and was measured for his uniform as well. I look forward to seeing him in the field starting with our Camp of Instruction.

I would also like to wish everyone a very merry CHRISTmas and a happy New Year. Try not to eat too much, we all need to be able to get in that wool by camp time.

I am trying to get a new thing put together for 2008 in association with the Park Service. Instead of going to several schools this year and taking off several days from work and then not being able to carry muskets with us, I have worked out a school field trip day. The Park Service is going to let us use their facility and we'll have area schools field trip out to see us. We can reach many schools at one time and we'll be able to fire our muskets and anything else we would normally do. I am leaning toward Monday, April 14th. I know this is a long way off, but give it some thought and if you can spare a vacation day or just play hooky it's for a really good cause. April is when most schools get to the Civil War section of their history classes. For some, this may be the only accurate history class they get.

We are looking at February 16th for our annual meeting date so mark your calendars now and don't forget to get all of those uniform repairs or replacements done while we are in the off season.

Merry CHRISTmas,

1st Sgt. Gammon
