Vol. VI. July/August 2007 Issue 6.
Captains Column
This is a combo newsletter for the months of July and August. Even so I would like to begin by going back to the month of June and doing some review.
The first weekend in June was the Cold Harbor Living History. This is a regular event for us and is usually well attended. Those present included Bob Baird, Travis Clements, Eldridge Firth, Dave Gammon, Matt Gammon, Ryan Hughes and Tom Stafford. We were also joined by a few members of the 4th North Carolina. We did two demos on Saturday and of course had the candlelight tour that night. The demos went well and the night tours had their usual large crowds. Thanks goes to Tammy Gammon for bringing us KFC chicken for Saturdays supper meal and also to Jack Alexander. Jack had left us a cooler of ice-cold root beer. Both the meal and the root beer hit the spot. Thanks again! I think everyone had a good time and enjoyed the day. The event ended up being just the one-day. We awoke Sunday morning to rain so we made an early exit. It proceeded to rain all day.
The following weekend June 9th & 10th was the Dixie Days event in Mechanicsville. This was our first time there. We had heard several good things about the event. We were there mainly for recruiting. However, the event turned out not to be what we had hoped for. The large crowds we were expecting did not materialize. With the low turnout and the unproductively of the event we decided not to return for Sunday. Dont get me wrong. It is always good to spend time with my F Company pals and I did enjoy the day. I got to visit with some friends I had not seen for a while and spent some time with Alan Farley of Reenactors Mission for Jesus Christ, so the day was productive just not in the way we had anticipated. I would like to thank Tom Stafford, David Gammon, Ryan Hughes, and Wes Catlett for helping out at the event.
In July we attended Gettysburg, and because we were under the impression that the Fighting First Regiment was not going to be there we had made arrangements to fall in with Longstreets Corps. To our surprise the FFR was there, but we decided to stick with our original plan. Those in attendance included Tom Stafford, David Gammon, Ryan Hughes, Matt Gammon, Nate Pate, Bill Ward, and our newest recruit, Roger Mitchell. This was Rogers first reenactment. With it being July of course the weather was Hot. The battles went well on both Saturday and Sunday. We did have some problems with the heat but were able to overcome them. Forming up with Longstreets Corps reminded me of our Jackson Division days. It was a good fit. It was great having the nucleus of F Company at the event along with the animated Mr. Bill Ward. Saturday night the Lieutenant, Mr. Ward, and I took supper in town. Thanks Mr. Ward for that.
I would also like to commend Roger Mitchell on his performance at the event. He performed very well in the line of duty on Saturday. The heat and blistered feet took their toll but all-in-all Roger did very well.
Now we have a bit of a break. We have nothing scheduled until September. We are working on a possible muster on August 18th in Fredericksburg. Those of you with E-mail should have gotten information on this already. Please respond and let us know if you are interested.
Just a reminder and to update everyone: Fenny Hanes remains our only source for making uniforms. The F Company wool is in Richmond now. We supply Fenny with the material and she produces the uniform. If you want something else made such as jean cloth trousers the material for that is bought directly from Fenny herself. If you have any questions please contact Tom Stafford or Dave Gammon from the Uniform Committee. Speaking of the Uniform Committee:
The make-up of the committee is as follows:
Mike Vice Chairman
Tom Stafford - Associate Member
David Gammon - Associate Member
Bob Wilburn Honorary Member
As far as the Recruiting Committee is concerned we are all members of that committee. I am the contact person. We have brochures at the Museum of the Confederacy but word of mouth continues to be our best form of advertising. Well, that is it for now; please let us know if you are interested in the August muster.
Please keep our troops in your prayers.
See everyone at our next event.
Respectfully Submitted,
Captain T. Lee Turley, 21st Va. F Company
1st Sergeants Report
Gentlemen,
Well, Gettysburg has come and gone and it was a nice event. There was a tiny bit of confusion as to what group we were going to attach ourselves to since we had made arrangements to fall in with Longstreet's Corps being assured that the FFR was not going to be there, which they were. Captain Turley ironed it all out and we fell in with Longstreet's Corps as promised. A big thanks you to all who attended.
Our own Mike Vice has graciously agreed to do another tour for our summer muster. He will be doing the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse on the 18th of August. We will meet at the Chancellorsville Visitor's Center at 10:00 A.M. sharp. The tour will be about 3 - 4 hours long and we will have a late lunch in Fredericksburg. Please let your Corporals or myself know of your intentions by August 10th if possible.
We also have Antietam coming up on Sept. 8 - 9. Please also let your Corporals or myself know if you will still be attending or not and if you would like to get in if you were not already registered. Any openings will be given out on a first come, first served basis.
Directions will be included later in the newsletter for the muster and Antietam. Please do your best to support the unit for the remainder of the season.
If anyone has any uniform needs please see Fenny at the Richmond Depot before the end of the season. We are going to be re-negotiating our deal with her for next year and we anticipate some minor price increases. Please pay Jack in advance for any wool needs and Captain Turley is in possession of our wool at this time.
Please keep Johnathan and Kim in your prayers as they are still serving our country. Kim is still in Iraq but we hope she will be coming home in August.
Respectfully,
1st Sergeant D. E. Gammon
